Taking a break from what you’re doing and doing something else for a while is a really beneficial thing to do if you’re struggling with something. One of the stages of being creative is called incubation, which is when you unconsciously still work at a problem that you’ve been consciously working through. During this unconscious thinking, you continue to work over the problem, and might later come up with a new idea. Allowing incubation to happen by letting the thought process carry on in your unconscious mind is thought to increase the odds of solving a problem, and this benefit is increased if you given it a long period of time to work, and without doing anything else too demanding at the same time. That means that doing something completely different to your problem, like going for a walk, spending time with friends, or even having a nap, can all help us to solve a problem!
